Southport and Formby PCN Celebrates Two Years of its' General Practice Assistant Training Programme

Southport and Formby Primary Care Network (PCN) recently hosted a celebration event to honour the achievements of its General Practice Assistants (GPAs). The event marked two successful years since the launch of the GPA training programme, which has strengthened primary care services across Southport and Formby.

The event brought together qualified GPAs to share their experiences and meet others working in local GP practices. Dr. Rob Caudwell (Clinical Director) and Dr. Lindsay McClelland (Clinical Operational Lead) attended the event to congratulate the newly qualified GPAs, representing Southport and Formby PCN, joined by Louise Sproat (HR Manager) and Dave Cowie (PCN Lead GPA), who established the programme, to show their continued support.

These trained professionals will now play a key role in supporting both administrative and clinical tasks across GP practices in the area.

The newly trained GPAs will now help GPs with a variety of tasks to make sure practices run smoothly and patients get the best care. These tasks include:

  • Sorting and prioritising clinical post for GPs
  • Booking patient appointments, tests, and follow-ups
  • Helping to prepare patients for GP consultations by gathering brief histories and basic checks
  • Taking urine samples, checking blood pressure, and doing ECGs or blood tests
  • Filling out simple forms
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
  • Helping GPs communicate with external agencies
  • Assisting with immunisations and wound care

Clare Touhey, Manager of Southport and Formby PCN commented: “This programme has been a fantastic success. Our General Practice Assistants play a vital role in supporting both GPs and patients. We’re proud of what they’ve achieved and excited to see the positive impact they’ll continue to make.”

The training programme demonstrates Southport and Formby PCN’s commitment to building a strong, capable workforce that enhances healthcare delivery for the local community.
