Current Training Opportunities
Current Funding Opportunities:
Commissioned through the Higher Education England (HEE), there are funding opportunities that the training hub oversee to help the workforce across our PCNs and practices. Below are the current funding opportunities that may be of interest to you. Please get in touch if your PCN or practice would like further information or if you need assistance with opportunities that are not listed below.
GP & GPN New to Practice Fellowships
- £7,200 one session per week pro rata for GP Fellows
- £3,800 one session per week pro rata for GPN Fellows
- To join the programme fellows must be newly qualified in the last 12months. The programme offers mentorship, coaching and requires development of PCN portfolio working.

Physician Associates
- £510 per week per student - place students from Chester and Edge Hill University.
- £5,000 national HEE grant for PAs embarking on preceptorships in primary care, (i.e. newly qualified). Email etp.manager@nhs.net to request a claim form
- Preceptorship Scheme - Trial foundation programme in partnership with Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust to give graduating PAs level of support for years with 6 months placements in rotation of primary and secondary care posts practice. Email etp.admin@nhs.net
Continued Professional Development (CPD)
- CPD training to be sourced at Cheshire and Merseyside level and made available to professionals.
- The following staff are eligible for CPD funding: All registered nurses, Midwives, Art Therapists, Drama therapists, Music therapists, Chiropodists/podiatrists, Dietitians, Occupational therapists, Operating Department Practitioners, Orthoptists, Osteopaths, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Prosthetists and Orthotists, Radiographers, Speech and language therapists.

Nurse Preceptorship /Associates
- Funded places on the GPN Preceptorship programme for nurses who are new to general practice and require GP fundamentals and clinical skills training. This will be complemented by the new to practice Fellowship programme (as above) where GPNs are newly qualified. Contact etp.manager@nhs.net to express interest
- We place student nurses and nurse associates across Sefton Hub.
Workforce Planning Support
- Funded PCN workforce planning workshop with workforce planning consultants, One Medical.
- The workshop can be adapted to suit the needs of your PCN and can also be attended by the local Training Hub upon request. Contact Caroline Richardson at etp.manager@nhs.net to book your workshop or discuss further.
Additional Training Hub Support
Your Training Hub can also support with:
- Non-Medical Prescribing:
enables practitioners to manage full episodes of patient care, while working within their scope of professional practice. Funding is available to those interested in becoming an NMP and we can offer up to £1,500 for tuition fees. This funding has been made available by Health Education England.
- Mental Health Workers, Community Paramedics:
we hope to secure additional funding to support training requirements for PCNs and practices.
- Establishing ARRS roles:
Support for some newly appointed roles in PCNs to help with clinical education requirements and retention of this workforce.
- Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP):
Opening new learning environments to support all types of students.
- Clinical supervision:
Coaching and mentorship training; supervision training to support all types of students.
- Apprenticeships:
Support to source suitable apprenticeship and access levy funding to cover 100% of associated training costs.
